A set of wheels is the most visible change you can make to a truck, and the one people most often get slightly wrong by buying online. Fit is a handful of numbers. Here is what each one means and why it matters.
Bolt pattern
The bolt pattern is the number of lug holes and the diameter of the circle they sit on, written like 6x139.7 (six lugs on a 139.7 mm circle, also called 6x5.5"). It has to match the vehicle exactly. Patterns that look similar, like 5x114.3 and 5x115, are not interchangeable, and forcing them causes vibration and lug failure.
Offset and backspacing
Offset is the distance between the wheel's mounting face and its centreline, in millimetres. Positive offset tucks the wheel in toward the suspension; negative offset pushes it out toward the fender. Backspacing measures the same idea from the back of the wheel. Getting it wrong means the tire rubs on the suspension or the fender liner, or sticks out past the body. A wheel that "fits" the bolt pattern can still be the wrong offset, which is where most online purchases go wrong. Lifted trucks in particular need the offset chosen with the lift in mind.
Centre bore
The centre bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel. On a hub-centric fit, the bore matches the hub exactly and the hub carries the weight. Aftermarket wheels often have a larger bore to fit many vehicles, and use hub rings to fill the gap. Without them the wheel is centred only by the lugs, and a slight vibration at highway speed is the usual result.
Load rating
Every wheel carries a maximum load. On a half-ton pickup it is easy to meet; on a three-quarter-ton or one-ton truck that tows or carries a plow, it is the first thing to check and the reason some good-looking wheels are simply not suitable.
Reading a tire size
A tire marked 275/65R18 is 275 mm wide, with a sidewall that is 65% of that width, on an 18-inch wheel. An LT in front of the size means a light-truck tire built for heavier loads; a P or nothing means a passenger tire. The letters after the size are the load index and speed rating. When you change wheel diameter, the tire's overall diameter should stay close to stock so the speedometer, the ABS and the gearing behave as designed.
Plus-sizing
Going up a wheel size (say, 17 to 20 inches) with a lower-profile tire keeps the overall diameter the same while changing the look. It usually means a firmer ride and more exposure to pothole damage. Going up in tire diameter, for ground clearance or a more aggressive stance, means checking for rubbing at full steering lock and under compression, and often means a levelling kit or lift to make room.
TPMS and lug hardware
Most vehicles built since the late 2000s have tire-pressure sensors in the wheels. A new set of wheels needs either the sensors moved over or new ones fitted and programmed. Aftermarket wheels also often need different lug nuts, because the seat (the shape where the nut meets the wheel) differs from the factory wheel.
Winter wheel sets
A second set of wheels with winter tires mounted is the single most practical wheel purchase in this climate. It saves the cost and wear of swapping tires twice a year, keeps your good wheels away from the salt, and lets you pick a size that suits winter (narrower is usually better in snow). Steel or basic alloys keep the cost down.
